Резюме

This study focuses on the classification and agreement of common gender nouns in Russian. This study investigates whether common gender nouns have double lexical entries, as Zaliznjak (1967) and Iomdin (1980) suggest. They propose that common gender nouns have double lexical entries, according to which these nouns belong to two groups, one marked as lexically male and the other as female. To achieve the study purpose, investigations of previous works and questionnaire surveys were conducted. The results show that common gender nouns have one lexical entry. Furthermore, we show that these nouns are not in a discrete category but include certain gradation, from nouns that behave more like masculine nouns to those that behave more like feminine. This study also reveals that common gender nouns show not only semantic agreement but also syntactic agreement; these nouns show syntactic agreement by means of the grammatical features of gender and declension type.
