Statue of the Award of the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski for a Scholarly Book by a Young Researcher in the Field of Linguistics or Literary Studies (adapted by the Faculty Council with Protocol No.4/09.04.2024)
General provisions
- The award aims to encourage research practices in young scholars in the field of linguistics and literary studies.
- The award is granted on behalf of the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski
- In even-numbered years, the prize is awarded to a book in the field of literary studies, whereas in odd-numbered years – to a book in the field of linguistics.
- The recipient of the award receives a certificate and a cash prize of 500 BGN.
- The cash prize and the certificate are provided by the Faculty of Slavic Studies.
- The award is announced during the official ceremony celebrating the patron saint’s day of Sofia University, held on November 24, and is presented by a representative of the Faculty Council or the Dean’s Office.
Eligibility Criteria
- The author of the book ought to be no older than 36 years old on the date of the award ceremony.
- The author must hold a PhD degree in the field of philology.
- The book must have been published within the two calendar years prior to the year when the competition takes place.
- The book must be an original scholarly work (a monograph or a collection of studies), first edition, written in Bulgarian.
- The book may be published in print or electronic format, but it must have an ISBN or ISSN.
Announcement of the Award and Selecting the Winner
- Each year on September 1st, the Faculty of Slavic Studies issues an announcement on its website and sends it to academic institutions, disclosing the application criteria for the current year’s award.
- Applications for participation may be submitted by the author themself, the publisher, or an authorized representative.
- The application must be accompanied by a print or electronic copy (if the format is electronic) of the book, which should be deposited at the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Slavic Studies.
- Applications are accepted until Octorber 30.
- The Faculty Council selects a 5-member committee of specialists from the Faculty at its October meeting.
- The committee reviews the submissions and, at its meeting in November, announces the shortlist of nominated books (from three to five), from which the committee selects a winner.
- At the same meeting, the Faculty Council determines the winner by secret ballot and simple majority vote of those present.
