BOOK BY AN ESTABLISHED SCHOLAR

Statute of the Award of the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski for a Scholarly Book by a Researcher in the Field of Linguistics or Literary Studies (adapted by the Faculty Council with Protocol No. 4/09.04.2024)

 

General Provisions

  1. The award aims to encourage scientific research in the fields of linguistics and literary studies.
  2. The prize is awarded on behalf of the Faculty of Slavic studies at Sofia university St. Kliment Ohridski.
  3. In even-numbered years, the prize is awarded to a book in the field of linguistics, whereas in odd-numbered years – to a book in the field of literary studies.
  4. The winner of the award is granted a certificate, as well as a cash prize of 500 BGN.
  5. Both the certificate and the cash prize are provided by the Faculty of Slavic Studies.
  6. The award is announced during the official ceremony at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski celebrating the 24th of May – the Day of Bulgarian Education, Culture and of the Slavic Script. It is presented by a representative of the Rectorate.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Bulgarian authors affiliated with academic and research institutions in the country or abroad can participate in the competition with a monograph or a collection of studies.
  2. The book must have been published within the two calendar years prior to the year when the competition takes place.
  3. The book must be an original scholarly work (a monograph or a collection of studies), first edition, written in Bulgarian.
  4. The book may be published in print or electronic format, but it must have an ISBN or ISSN.

 

Announcement of the Award and Selecting the Winner

  1. Each year on the 15th of March, the Faculty of Slavic Studies issues an announcement on its website and sends it to academic institutions, disclosing the application criteria for the current year’s award.
  2. Applications for participation may be submitted by the author themself, the publisher, or an authorized representative.
  3. The application must be accompanied by a print or electronic copy (if the format is electronic) of the book, which should be deposited at the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Slavic Studies.
  4. Applications are accepted until April 30.
  5. The Faculty Council selects a 5-member committee of specialists from the Faculty at its April meeting.
  6. The committee reviews the submissions and, at its meeting in May, announces the shortlist of nominated books (from three to five), from which the committee selects a winner.
  7. At the same meeting, the Faculty Council determines the winner by secret ballot and simple majority vote of those present.
