“Professions of the Future: Social Innovations and Competence Development in Response to the Requirements of Creative and Recreational Industries and the Modern Media Environment”
Application period: February 5, 2025 – March 5, 2025
Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Slavic Stidies are conducted in full-time, part-time, and independent study formats.
The duration of study is as follows:
- Three years for full-time doctoral programmes,
- Four years for part-time doctoral programmes,
- Three years for independent doctoral study.
Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree to be eligible.
Admission to full-time and part-time doctoral programmemes is conducted through a competitive exam.
The competition is announced in the State Gazette and on the official website of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. The announcement includes details about the application deadlines, submission location, and the examination period.
Required Documents:
- Application form (template provided);
- Curriculum vitae;
- Master’s diploma and its academic transcript – both the original document and one copy of it, or a certificate of completed Master’s studies for candidates who have not yet received their diploma (a certificate of recognized higher education if the diploma was issued by a foreign university);
- Proof of payment for the application fee (to be paid to the Bulgarian National Bank – Central Office;

- The payment document must include: full name, personal ID number, city of residence, faculty, and the application fee.
- Other supporting documents proving the applicant’s academic interests and achievements in the respective field;
- Declaration (template provided) stating that the applicant has not previously been enrolled as a doctoral student under a government-funded programme;
- Additional documents – for doctoral candidates under Article 21, paragraph 7 of the Higher Education Act, if required for the research project.
The application form must be submitted electronically following the Electronic Document Submission Guidelines.
All required documents must be attached as scanned copies.
Examination Process:
The specialized entrance exam consists of a written and an oral component, both of which receive separate grades.
- The written exam lasts four hours.
- Candidates must achieve a minimum grade of 4.50 (“Very Good”) on the written exam to qualify for the oral exam.
- Successful candidates must obtain an average grade of at least 5.00 (“Very Good”) to be admitted under the state-funded doctoral programme.
- For self-funded doctoral students, the minimum average score required is 4.50 (“Very Good”).
Independent Doctoral Study Admission:
Applicants who have already completed the core part of their dissertation can apply for independent doctoral study without taking an entrance exam. This process is open throughout the academic year, except in July and August.
Applicants must submit a draft dissertation and bibliography to the relevant department.
Required Documents for Independent Doctoral Study:
- Application to the Rector;
- Curriculum vitae;
- Copy of Master’s diploma and academic transcript;
- Proof of payment (for applicants under Article 21, paragraph 5 of the Higher Education Act who are not employed under a primary contract with Sofia University).
The department head appoints a reviewer to assess the submitted dissertation draft and report to the department council within three months. If approved, the department head proposes the dissertation topic, research field, and individual study plan.
Independent doctoral candidates who are not employed by Sofia University must pay an annual tuition fee, as determined by the Rector’s order based on a decision of the Academic Council.
